South Korea 15-Day Itinerary: From Seoul to the Hidden Korea (Hanoks & DMZ)

Sommaire

Hello travelers!

Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure? South Korea isn’t just giant screens and K-Pop; it is above all a huge heart and sublime traditions. It’s one of my absolute favorite trips!

As a passionate Travel Planner, I designed and experienced a 15-day trip that is a true cocktail of emotions. I’m taking you with me from bustling Seoul to ancestral Hahoe, passing through Hanoks where the welcome exceeded all my expectations. Hold on tight, we’re going to search for the Korean soul, with super practical tips and secret addresses!

 My Itinerary: Seoul ➡️ Jeonju ➡️ Suncheon ➡️ Busan ➡️ Gyeongju ➡️ Andong-Hahoe ➡️ Seoul (Hongdae)

Seoul, My Love-at-First-Sight City

I experienced Seoul intensely, in two chapters. It showed me its historical side, then its wildest energy!

The Flavors: Forget Shyness, I Dove In!

  • Becoming a Chef: I started with a cooking class in Mapo, followed by a tour of a local market to buy my fresh ingredients. A real treat and such a nice way to break the ice!

  • Gwangjang Market: This is a food lover’s paradise! Between the bean pancakes and the noodles, the atmosphere at Gwangjang Market is electric—a feast I didn’t miss.

  • The Classics: Of course, I had Korean BBQ in Insadong (perfect even when traveling alone thanks to the small restaurants!). And in the evening, I adopted the Chimaek tradition (crispy fried chicken and beer). Special mention for the small Hodu-gwaja (walnut breads) for sweet breaks.

  • Tip from Your Travel Planner: End the day at Naksan Park for a quiet walk on the old city wall, offering a breathtaking view at night.

Culture, History, and Breathtaking Views

  • The Historical Heart: I took the time to visit the great Palaces and the immense National Museum of Korea. I also attended a play alone, a beautiful artistic discovery.

  • DMZ: The Story to Tell! The excursion to the Demilitarized Zone is extremely striking. But prepare yourself mentally… and physically! The descent into the North Korean infiltration tunnel has an 11% slope. The ascent? I tell you, it left me out of breath! It was an unexpected athletic challenge!

  • The Glam and the Zen: In ultra-modern Gangnam, I found a bubble of calm at Bongeunsa Temple with a delicious Omija tea. And to finish beautifully, I returned to the student neighborhood of Hongdae for its overflowing energy, perfect for my last days!

The Human Warmth of the Hanoks

This is where, traveling alone, I felt the deep soul and kindness of Korea.

Jeonju: Golden Hosts

  • A Dream Location: The Jeonju Hanok Village is sublime, but the experience was made magical by my stay at Hanok Dream! The hosts are incredibly kind.

  • Cultural Encounter: I had the chance to chat with a family who had come to Jeonju for ancestral worship. They passionately explained the essence of Chuseok and the importance of this moment. This sharing gave such a rich perspective to my trip!

  • The Experience: Sleeping on the Ondol (heated floor) is a rite of passage!

Andong-Hahoe Village: My Hanok from Another Time

  • The Authentic Experience: I slept in a Hanok over 200 years old inside the village itself! My host was absolutely adorable and patiently introduced me to traditional calligraphy.

  • Solo Traveler, But Not Alone: I was the only foreigner, but the atmosphere with the other guests was incredibly friendly. The traditional breakfast served every morning was delicious.

  • The Secret of Hahoe: I took the local bus (a bit rustic, which is fun!) to get there. But the real gift? Walking around the village in the morning before the tourists arrived, surrounded only by locals. It’s magical!

Gyeongju: History Express Mode (Day Trip from Busan)

  • My Practical Choice: To optimize my time and see the essentials, I chose to do Gyeongju as a full-day trip from Busan! I took a tour with a guide to maximize my time there. It’s intense, but perfectly feasible thanks to the fast KTX train to Singyeongju. The guide allowed me to explore the essentials of this open-air museum: the burial mounds of the Tumuli Parks and the incredible Bulguksa Temple. This is the pro trick for express circuits!

From Nature to Port Cities (Suncheon & Busan)

Suncheon: The Green Break

  • Fresh Air: This is the breath of fresh air. Suncheon Bay is magnificent. An easy little walk leads to a spectacular viewpoint over the marshes.

Busan: The Oceanic Vibe

Busan is the perfect contrast to Seoul: here, I felt so free with the sea air!

  • Temple by the Water: Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is one of the most beautiful I have seen, literally perched on the edge of the ocean.

  • The Photo Hack (My Solo Tip): To ensure I got great souvenirs and discovered hidden corners, I participated in a small group guided tour that included a photographer! This is the ultimate tip for stunning photos and meeting people, especially when traveling alone. A truly social and visual experience!

  • Seafood Feast: I treated myself to street food and got lost in the bustle of the Jagalchi Fish Market. And in the evening? I found a great cafe or bar with a view to admire the lights.

Returning to Seoul (Hongdae) and Illuminated Suwon: The Trend

For the last two nights, I returned to the capital. My big highlight to close this trip? The nighttime escape!

  • Suwon by Night: After exploring Hwaseong Fortress by day, I strongly recommend you return once night falls! The illuminated ramparts and gates offer a magical spectacle and a completely different atmosphere. It’s a beautiful, poetic end to the trip.

  • Hongdae: The Final Energy Boost: I settled in the Hongdae district. It’s the youth neighborhood, perfect for souvenir shopping and enjoying that incredible energy before departure.

💡 Practical Tips from Your Travel Planner

I’m sharing my secrets so your trip goes smoothly. Take note!

  • The Chuseok Logistics Trap: I learned that while Chuseok (the harvest festival) is a wonderful cultural period, it is the worst time to travel if you depend on public transport! The entire nation moves. KTX trains are quickly booked up. My advice: if possible, avoid planning your long journeys during that week!

  • Intercity Transport: The KTX (fast train) is your best friend for long distances. But don’t be afraid of express buses for regional connections! Pro tip: Premium express buses are the equivalent of Business Class on a plane, but at a much more affordable price. Perfect luxury for resting between two stops!

  • The Hanok Sleep: The walls are thin and the bed on the Ondol is firm, but the experience is irreplaceable. Consider this experience as total cultural immersion.

  • The Tunnel Climb: If you take the DMZ excursion, mentally prepare for the 11% climb back up the tunnel—it’s more athletic than you think!
